The Kent town of Rochester is located on the banks of the River Medway and is most famous for its stunning Norman cathedral.

There has been a bishop at Rochester since the seventh century, only Canterbury has had one longer in the Anglican church.

The cathedral itself, which is a major tourist attraction in the town, was constructed in the eleventh century and is one of the finest of its type in Britain, with a fine Norman nave and crypt which are complimented by its glorious Romanesque facade.

Rochester has long been associated with Charles Dickens, who lived nearby and based many of his most famous works in and around the town. To this day the great author is commemorated around the town in the shape of several Dickens museums that celebrate his impressive body of work, as well as festivals in his honour during the summer and winter months.
